What Is Two-Phase Orthodontic Treatment? And Does My Child Need It?

At Truman Orthodontics, we believe that creating a healthy, beautiful smile is about more than just straight teeth, it’s about setting your child up for long-term success with proper jaw development, alignment, and function. That’s where Two-Phase Orthodontic Treatment comes in.

If you’ve heard this term before but aren’t sure what it means, you’re not alone. In this blog, we’ll explain what two-phase treatment is, why it’s sometimes necessary, and how it benefits your child’s smile both now and in the future.

What Is Two-Phase Orthodontic Treatment?

Two-phase orthodontic treatment is a specialized process that involves two separate stages of care with a resting period in between. It’s designed to correct problems with jaw growth, bite alignment, and spacing early in your child’s development, often before all their permanent teeth have come in.

Phase 1: Early (Interceptive) Treatment

Resting Period: Monitoring Growth

Phase 2: Full Orthodontic Treatment (usually braces or aligners)

Phase 1: Building the Foundation

  1. This first phase usually begins between the ages of 7 and 10, when your child still has a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth. The goal here is to:
  2. Guide jaw growth to improve the bite and facial structure
  3. Create space for incoming permanent teeth
  4. Address harmful oral habits (like thumb sucking or tongue thrusting)
  5. Correct bite problems (overbite, underbite, crossbite, etc.)
  6. Addressing potential airway concerns
  7. Prevent future issues from becoming more severe

We may use appliances such as expanders, or braces, depending on your child’s specific needs.

Resting Period: Let Nature Do Its Work

Once Phase 1 is complete, we typically take a break and simply monitor your child’s growth. During this period:

  1. Retainers will be worn at night to protect corrections and progress
  2. The remaining 12-16 permanent teeth are coming in
  3. Check-ins with our Doctors will occur periodically to monitor teeth and jaw development

Phase 2: Perfecting the Smile

Once most or all of the permanent teeth have erupted, usually between ages 11 and 13, Phase 2 begins. This phase typically involves:

  1. Metal braces or clear aligners (like Invisalign®)
  2. Fine-tuning the alignment of teeth
  3. Making sure the bite is ideal for long-term stability and function

The goal of Phase 2 is what most people imagine when they think of orthodontics: a straight, confident, and healthy smile.

Why Choose Two-Phase Treatment?

  1. Two-phase treatment isn’t necessary for every child, but when recommended, it can:
  2. Prevent more complex treatment later
  3. Reduce the need for tooth extractions or jaw surgery
  4. Improve facial balance and symmetry
  5. Correct harmful oral habits early
  6. Make future treatment faster and more effective
