Invisible braces? Ask Dr. Truman!

No matter your age, everyone deserves a nice, straight white smile. While traditional metal braces have been straightening the teeth of adolescents and adults for decades. But now there are other teeth straightening options that are more cosmetically appealing. We’re talking about Invisalign braces, the clear custom-made trays that function much like the old-school wire braces of the past.

This article looks more closely at the Invisalign product and the types of situations where it offers an alternative to traditional metal braces.

Invisalign Braces to Avoid “Brace Face”

Braces work by inserting metal brackets with connecting wires that gradually move teeth into a new, more aesthetically and physically appealing shape. Invisalign liners are clear trays that are custom-computer designed to slip over the teeth and gradually act in the same way that wire braces do.

It must be said that Invisalign will not work for every situation; consult Dr. Truman for your options. Typically adults or teens can utilize Invisalign if they have mild to moderate crowding of their teeth or have other spacing issues that are fairly easy to correct. If your bite is off due to an overbite or underbite, typically Invisalign is not the best option.

How Do Invisalign Braces Work?

The first step is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Truman. We will take x-rays and undertake an exam to determine the best course of treatment. If you’re a good candidate for Invisalign, and that’s the option chosen, we’ll make a plan for realigning your smile.

You will be fitted with several versions of the Invisalign braces. The product is made from a clear acrylic or plastic material and they come in trays that fit over the top of your teeth. Every few weeks these trays will be replaced by new ones, which move the teeth a bit more every time.

This process takes somewhere between 10 months to two years, depending upon how much movement needs to occur.

What are the Benefits of Invisalign?

One of the chief benefits of Invisalign is that they are minimally disruptive. Instead of making a big splash at school or in the workplace with a mouth full of braces, many people won’t even notice you are gradually changing your appearance. Another benefit is that these trays can be removed for eating and then brushing and flossing. If you’ve ever known someone with braces, you probably already know how difficult it is to get all the food particles out from between metal braces.

What are the Drawbacks of Invisalign Braces?

There are two drawbacks to Invisalign that immediately come to mind: the first is that not everyone can use them. Of course, everyone would immediately gravitate to clear braces if they had that choice, but Invisalign simply won’t work well for more complicated dental issues.

The second drawback to Invisalign is that you will pay extra for the cosmetic appeal of these braces. Especially since many adults choose Invisalign, this is an important consideration because this treatment is rarely covered by dental insurance.
