Separators are designed to make a small space between your teeth so we can properly fit bands (small ring-like braces for your back teeth used with Braces and certain type of appliances) at your next visit. Separators may make you feel as if you have something stuck between your teeth, such as a piece of corn or steak. It also may feel as if you are biting on them a little when you touch your teeth together. Both of these feelings are completely normal and are to be expected.

Your teeth will likely feel sore for a few days following separator placement. Feel free to take an over-the-counter pain medication such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen as directed on the bottle to alleviate any discomfort you may feel. While you have separators in, please DO NOT floss in the areas where the separators are placed. If you do, the separators will likely come out. Please note this is the only time we will recommend no flossing in certain areas.

Please be very careful with the foods you eat while you have separators in your mouth. Foods that are sticky, chewy, and hard must be avoided as these types of foods will likely cause your separators to come out. If a separator does come out, please give our office a call to see if the separator needs to be replaced prior to your next appointment

What Is An Expander & How Does It Work?

Palatal expanders are custom made appliances whose purpose is to create more space in a person’s mouth through widening the jaw. This orthodontic appliance is made of two halves that fit over a number of the top teeth in the back of a person’s mouth and are held together by a screw in the middle. To activate the expander and begin moving the teeth to their ideal positions, the screw must be turned in small increments daily. Once the desired expansion is achieved, we will leave the appliance in for a few more months in order to stabilize the expansion. An expander is typically worn for three to six months, depending on your specific needs.

Expanders can help a number of common orthodontic problems, some of which include:

  • Crossbites
  • Crowding
  • Impacted teeth

Benefits of Orthodontic Expanders

Beyond just expanding a person’s jaw in order to address our patient’s orthodontic problems, expanders also provide other benefits like:

  • Broaden the a persons smile, making it look more appealing
  • Ability to limit the number of teeth that need to be remove
  • Improved breathing
  • Can shorten the overall orthodontic treatment time
