Top Questions – Las Vegas Childhood Orthodontics

What are the benefits of childhood orthodontics?
The biggest goal with childhood orthodontics is prevention. We help make sure a “bad bite” (when the top and bottom teeth don’t fit together well) or crooked teeth don’t turn into a problem as the child grows. We do this by straightening teeth and making sure there is room for permanent teeth to grow in properly. We also teach the child proper oral hygiene which will be important throughout their life.

Can baby teeth cause my child problems?
Part of our process is to make sure there is adequate room for adult teeth to form. When baby molar teeth (the larger teeth in the back of the mouth) are lost we sometimes need to help hold that space for the big teeth that are forming under the gum line. We do this with an orthodontic fixed wire device that holds the space until the new tooth emerges. Sometimes baby teeth even need to be extracted when the mouth is too crowded, which can cause an impaction. An impaction is when the new tooth forms under the surface but there’s nowhere for it to emerge. This process ensures a beautiful healthy smile. With modern dentistry, this is something every adult can achieve – which is why childhood orthodontics is so important.

How will braces impact my child’s ability to do “normal” activities?
Kids can play sports with a full set of braces. We recommend a high-end protective mouth guard no matter the activity. If the child wants to join band, playing wind or brass instruments takes a little adjusting – but it shouldn’t inhibit their ability to play. Generally, braces don’t stop a child from doing what they do best – being a kid.
